Kachin Women raped and killed by Burmese troops

A rights group has told DVB that seven Kachin women have been raped by Burmese troops in Kachin state, northern Burma. This happened in or close to Bhamo district in Kachin state in where additional battalions of Burmese soldiers have been deployed to launch an attack on KIA.

"Six women were raped this month", said Moon Nay Li, coordinator of the Kachin Women's Association Thailand (KWAT)- two of them happened in Donbon village, one in Momauk and three in Nahlon. The three women in Nahlon were then murdered after raped.

Burmese troops use "rape" as a weapon of war for long time and many have been documented by rights group. Meanwhile, The Shan Women's Action Network's landmark "License to rape" report in 2002 noted 173 incidents of rape by Burmese troops in the Shan state alone between 1996 and 2001, 61 percent were believed to be gang-rapes and while a quarter resulted in deaths.
